alphybetty

The Joyce alphybetty is a collection of Joyce's alphabet-letters as found in his correspondence and manuscripts. It is meant as a reference tool to provide images of how any particular letter may look when Joyce writes it.

To access the gathered alphabet, click on the respective link (below) for the letter you are looking for. There is one link per letter. Each letter features in initialmid-word and end-of-word position (a- / -a- / -a).

The letters are arranged degeneratively: each file begins with the more legible characters and progresses to less and less legible ones. I was careful to include only certain readings, i.e., instances of which there is no doubt as to what letter we are dealing with. Each file is word searchable.

The alphabetty may facilitate the deciphering of Joyce's hand. It cannot prove or disprove any particular reading but it may support, or undermine, likelihood.
